Healthcare providers talk a lot about protecting yourself against skin cancer, but there are other skin diseases and abnormalities seniors need to be aware of as well. Here are five of the most common conditions, how to identify them and their treatment methods:
Shingles—Shingles begin with burning, tingling or very sensitive skin. Next, a rash of raised dots develops and turns into painful blisters that last about two weeks. Pain, itching and numbness can continue for months or even years. Treatments include antiviral drugs, steroids, antidepressants and topical agents.
Hives—Resembling welts, hives are often itchy or can sting or burn. They are a common allergic reaction from medications, foods, food additives, temperature extremes or infections, and can last for minutes or days. Treatments include antihistamines.
Eczema—A non-contagious condition where skin becomes inflamed, red, dry or itchy. Eczema can be triggered by stress, irritants, allergens or the climate. The exact cause is not known. Treatments include topical or oral medications, or shots.
Rosacea—Rosacea is a redness on the face, often with visible blood vessels. Sometimes, thickened skin, bumps and pus-filled pimples also occur. Treatments include medications, laser therapy, dermabrasion and electrocautery.
