It’s not easy to deal with any type of tragedy. Whether it’s the sudden loss of a loved one or having lost your job, tragedy can strike at any time. When it occurs to your elderly loved one, you may be focused on the pain that you’re feeling, or the relief that they may still be alive and with you. However, when it happens, such as a stroke, heart attack, or other serious health issue that lands them in the hospital, you need to find a way to navigate through your heartache and start finding the proper elderly care for them when they are released.
Hospitals are trying to move patients out of their care more rapidly today than ever before.
Even before the Affordable Care Act (more commonly referred to as Obamacare) was passed in 2010, hospitals were pushing to have certain patients moved out of their beds and into either nursing homes or home care to fully recover. Now, with this new law, the federal government is imposing penalties to hospitals that don’t focus on this aspect of cost savings, and improved care.
So while you may be grieving or spending more time with your loved one in the hospital, they are getting closer and closer to being released. Do you know what the proper elderly care for them will be? Do you know if they will be moved to a nursing home? Do you know if they will need any type of home care?
If not, then you need to get planning for this as soon as possible.
Tragedy doesn’t wait for you to be ready. It doesn’t care if you’re confused, hurt, frightened, or anxious. Now that the tragedy has passed, you need to take a breath, go for a walk if you need to, gather your bearings, and then begin to focus on finding the right elder care services for your loved one.
This can be frustrating, especially if you have no experience with any of this in the past. If you need help, you can usually find support through the hospital administrative staff. You can also contact a local home care agency and find out what they could offer for your loved one so that they have the best elderly care at home when they are released from the hospital.
Tragedy can slow us down, and can cause us to stumble. However, when your loved one requires elderly care once they are released from the hospital, there’s not time to wait; begin learning as much as you can about it and help them get the proper care at home, ready when they get there.
